A.S.P.T. NATIONAL CERTIFICATION EXAMS

Phlebotomy Eligibility Requirements

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. One full year working in Phlebotomy.
OR
2. Six months working in Phlebotomy.
OR
3. A letter from a Health Care Supervisor attesting that part of the job is procuring blood specimens regularly; must be submitted with membership application,
OR
4. Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training program; Must have at least 100 documented successful venipunctures and 5 documented successful skin punctures.
AND
5. Current ASPT membership.

Point of Care Technician Eligibility Requirements

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Current A.S.P.T. member,
AND
2. Must be an A.S.P.T., NCA, AMT, or ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician, included are individuals licensed in nursing or clinical laboratory procedures,
AND
3. A letter from a supervisor verifying that applicant is currently working performing Point of Care as part of the regular duties, and length of time doing this work, must accompany membership application
OR
4. Completion of ASPT's POCT Training Program

EKG Technician Eligibility Requirements

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Current A.S.P.T. member,
AND
2. A mounted EKG must be submitted with the completed examination,
AND
3. An applicant for EKG Technician requires six (6) months practical experience in administering EKG's
OR
4. A graduate of an approved program
AND
5. A letter of recommendation from the instructor, or supervisor must accompany the application

Drug Collection Specialist I Eligibility Requirements (For those who deal with urine collections only.)

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Current A.S.P.T. member,
AND
2. A letter from the supervisor stating job job description regarding drug collection duties as a part of regular duties, and length of time employed at those duties, must accompany the membership application

Drug Collection Specialist II Eligibility Requirements (For collectors of urine and blood specimens.)

Requirements as Drug Specialist I with addition of:

1. Applicant must be an A.S.P.T., NCA, AMT, or ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician, included are also individuals licensed in nursing or clinical laboratory procedures.

Paramedical Insurance Examiner

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Current ASPT member, and:
AND
2. Applicant must be an ASPT, NCA, AMT, or ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician, included are also individual licensed in nursing or clinical laboratory procedures,
AND
3. A mounted EKG must be submitted with completed examination, and:
AND
4. A letter from the instructor, or supervisor, describing duties of the job and the length of time employed, must accompany the membership application.

Patient Care Technician I

The PCT I examination will cover general patient care, skin puncture techniques, clerical duties, as well as isolation, infection control, safety, Universal precautions, laboratory procedures and terminology.

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Current ASPT member,
AND
2. A letter from the supervisor describing the duties of the job, what tests are performed as a daily routine for that job, and length of time employed doing this testing, must accompany membership application.

Patient Care Technician II

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Meet all of the requirements for PCT I
AND
2. A mounted EKG must be submitted with completed examination
AND
3. A letter from the supervisor regarding EKG responsibilities must be submitted with membership application.

Patient Care Technician III

Qualifications for the certificate are:

1. Meet all the requirements for PCT I and II
AND
2. Participant must be an ASPT, NCA, AMT, or ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician, included are also individuals licensed in nursing or clinical laboratory procedures.

Study Outlines

Study outlines are distributed upon receipt of application and certification fees.

Examination Structure

The National Phlebotomy Certification Examination consists of both written and practical sections. All other examinations are written only. The mounted EKG, signed and dated both the participant and supervisor, properly labeled and interpreted, serves as the practical portion for those examinations. All written examinations are multiple choice. A score of 80% or better is required to successfully pass any certification examination.
